A blepharoplasty surgery or “eye lift” procedure rejuvenates the upper and lower eyelids by removing excess skin (hooding), lower lid “bags,” wrinkles, and dark circles. Although eyelid rejuvenation can be accomplished with Dr. Yagoda’s Tr-EYE-umph! non-surgical eye lift, there are reasons why some of her New York (NYC) and Manhattan patients might prefer a surgical solution.
The results of a non-surgical eyelift procedure, no matter how innovative, are temporary. Dr. Yagoda’s Tr-EYE-umph! uses a combination of neurotoxins to smooth crows’ feet and upper eyelids and fillers to lift the upper eyelid, reduce hooding, reduce tear trough depression and minimize bags. While results are immediate and downtime is minimal or even nonexistent, you will have to maintain your results with repeated treatments. Over time, this can make the initially less expensive non-surgery eye lift option more costly than the surgical solution, which has the added benefit of providing lasting results.
Blepharoplasty Surgery
Performed in either an office-based surgical facility or hospital with local anesthesia or local with oral sedation, blepharoplasty surgery takes between 45 minutes and two hours. The incisions are carefully hidden. For upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the incisions are hidden in the upper eye creases; for lower lid blepharoplasty, the incisions are hidden inside the lower lid or hidden below the eyelash line. When healed, they should be undetectable.
Recovery from Surgery
You should feel 100% back to normal in 24 hours and can be back at work in one day! Stitches are removed 5-7 days after the procedure. Expect bruising and swelling to last 5-10 days. You can walk and return to all your activities immediately but vigorous exercise should wait for about a week.
Risks and Complications of Surgery
Like any surgery, blepharoplasty carries a few risks: bleeding, infection, and anesthesia-related complications. Other possible risks include the inability to fully close the upper lid and fat protrusion that persists in the lower lid. Dr. Yagoda will discuss in detail all of the risks and benefits of this procedure to help you determine if it might be right for you.
